Capoeiristas practicing Capoeira on Leblon Beach

Image
Capoeiristas practice Capoeira on Flamengo beach. Capoeira is a mixture of martial arts, games, and dance that originated in Brazil created and developed by African slaves during the 16th century. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs. Enormously acrobatic, Capoeira was for most of its existence banned by the Brazilian authorities. It is now seen as a national sport. Rio de Janeiro , Brazil

Map Detailing Allied Invasion of Normandy

Image
On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the greatest amphibious attack in history to punch holes in Hitler's "Atlantic Wall". Six Allied combat divisions successfully penetrated the German network of traps and fortification to open the continent for a massive invasion that was the beginning of the end of World War II. UPI news map shows how the D-Day attack was carried out against a 60-mile stretch of the Normandy coast. The Americans stormed the beaches with code names "Omaha" and "Utah", while the Canadians took "Juno" and the British handled "Sword" and "Gold" beaches. More than 200,000 troops took part in the Normandy landings, designed to cut off the vital port of Cherbourg on the Cotentin Peninsula from the rest of Nazi-held France. May 23 , 1964

Controversial Czech artwork

Image
A closeup of an installation shows a representation of Bulgaria, part of Entropa exhibition in the atrium of the European Council headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, 15 January 2009. Czech sculptor David Cerny said his sculpture displayed in Brussels within the Czech EU presidency and mocking the 27 EU nations was created by a small group of Czechs, not by 27 European artists. The artwork is a symbolic map of Europe depicting stereotypes attributed to the individual member countries, such as Romania with Dracula's castle or Denmark with Lego cubes evoking the Prophet Mohammed's caricature that caused uproar in the Muslim world.
