Mount Semeru volcano in Indonesia
A file picture dated 05 December 2008 shows Mount Semeru spewing hot clouds seen from Penanjakan, Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia. Authorities in Indonesia raised the alert on the Mount Semeru volcano in East Java to maximum, warning of potentially dangerous lava flows, an official at the country's vulcanology centre said on 06 March 2009. The 3,376-metre (11,080-ft) Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes on Java island. The alert status was raised after the number of volcanic quakes indicated there may be a bigger eruption, said Surono, head of the country's vulcanology centre. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono urged the local administration around Mount Semeru to set up several places as possible evacuation centres.
