A file picture dated 05 December 2008 shows Mount Semeru spewing hot clouds seen from Penanjakan, Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia. Authorities in Indonesia raised the alert on the Mount Semeru volcano in East Java to maximum, warning of potentially dangerous lava flows, an official at the country's vulcanology centre said on 06 March 2009. The 3,376-metre (11,080-ft) Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes on Java island. The alert status was raised after the number of volcanic quakes indicated there may be a bigger eruption, said Surono, head of the country's vulcanology centre. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono urged the local administration around Mount Semeru to set up several places as possible evacuation centres. PROBOLINGGO , EAST JAVA , Indonesia

Mount Bagana, 1730m, an active volcano on Bougainville spewing sulphurous gases. This picture was taken on a six-week trip by private sailboat through the seldom-visited islands north of New Guinea, in an area of the South Pacific known as the Solomon Sea. Most of the islets here have no airport or regularly scheduled boat services, and their way of life is traditional by economic necessity. The region is also one of the most volcanically active in the world. Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea
