Rice crops fail to feed villagers who turn to opium



The bright green of rice paddies, in north-eastern Myanmar (Burma), in the Wa autonomous region in the Golden Triangle, close to the Chinese border. Rice is the staple crop for the villagers who however face a three month food deficit every year in which they grow opium poppies to raise money to buy food. A ban on opium is to be enforced by Wa authorities.
